Char Dham Yatra – As you all are familiar with that Uttarakhand is the land of God and Goddess. This Northern state of India which is totally in the hand of Himalaya has many religious and spiritual places. From the holy Ganga of Gangotri to the Har ki Pauri in Haridwar, this state has many religious places.

Uttarakhand has the four pilgrimage sites in India which are Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath refer as Char Dham Yatra. In this blog, I will let you know the best route, season, days and way of transport to achieve all four destinations.

Opening and Closing Dates of Char Dham

This is the first question which is in your mind that, what is the best season to explore Char Dham? Opening and Closing dates in which we should go?

The door of Char Dham opens from 2nd week of May to the end of October in Every year. The date may vary depends on climate and road conditions. From November to April the season is off due to heavy snowfall and bad climate. Another most important thing that you should avoid in the rainy season if you are planning to do so. The condition maybe not in your favor in Rainy season. Landslide and closing of the road may cause the problem to you, so avoid in Rainy season.

Char Dham Route from Delhi

We will consider Delhi as the hub from where we will start our journey to Char Dham Yatra. If you are coming from any other state then you will catch us to Haridwar which is the actual point to start the journey.


If you are traveling from Delhi the best route is

Delhi – Haridwar – Barkot – Yamunotri – Uttarkashi – Gangotri – Guptkashi – Kedarnath – Joshimath – Badrinath – Karnapryag – Rishikesh – Delhi

This is the route that you should consider to plan your Char Dham Yatra.

Days to complete Char Dham Yatra

How many days you should spend on your whole trip?

The average duration to complete all the four Dham is 10 to 12 days. It totally depends on you if you are completing the whole route then 10 to 12 days is enough for your trip. It can be increased if you want to explore more places than Char Dham, depending on totally you.

How to Travel Chaar Dham?

You can book Char Dham yatra from Delhi as well as from Haridwar by travel agents. If you are planning your own road trip by vehicle then you should follow the route given above. From Delhi, you can book train tickets to Haridwar then later travel your journey.

Our journey starts in Delhi

Day 1:  Delhi – Haridwar


Here is our Journey starts from Delhi and the stoppage for day 1 is Haridwar. We can also directly go to Barkot which is our next place but as Haridwar is the Holy place and before doing our Char Dham we should visit Haridwar and starts our journey from here. From Delhi, Haridwar is about 212 km which will take normal 7 hours. You can also explore Haridwar at Night like Har ki Pauri and main Bazar.

Day 2: Haridwar – Barkot

The next destination for day 2 will be Barkot, which is a town in Uttarkashi district which is 178 km from Haridwar. The route will pass by Dehradun – Mussoorie route which will take around 7 hrs to complete. Take a hotel in Barkot for 2 nights, rest well in the night because the next day will be a trek to Yamunotri. You can explore the local market of Barkot and can enjoy the beautiful town.

Day 3: Barkot – Yamunotri – Barkot


In the early morning of day 3, you should leave for Yamunotri Yatra. Around a distance of 46 km from Barkot, you will reach the trekking point from where you will trek to Yamunotri Dham. The trek is about 3 to 4 hrs long and there is another method to reach Yamunotri Dham like horse riding. In the evening you will get back to Barkot, it may take time to return from Yamunotri via trek.

Day 4: Barkot – Uttarkashi

The destination from Barkot is Uttarkashi on Day 4. At a distance of  85 km from Barkot Uttarkashi is situated. Your stay for day 4 is in Uttarkashi. Day 4 will not be a hectic day and you can easily enjoy the beautiful Uttarkashi Market and the location. Uttarkashi is the best option to stay because there is not much resource to stay near Gangotri Dham. The stay in Uttarkashi will be of 2 nights.

Day 5: Uttarkashi – Gangotri – Uttarkashi


On day 5 you will ready for your 2nd Dham which is Gangotri Dham. In the early morning, you will leave for Gangotri Dham which is 100 Km from Uttarkashi. On the same day, you have to come back to your hotel at night or in the evening. On day 5 you will enjoy the scenic view of Gangotri Dham and return back to the hotel in the evening.

Day 6: Uttarkashi – Guptkashi

 In the district of Rudraprayag, Guptkashi is our next destination of Day 6. Take a drive of 196 km from Uttarkashi you will reach Guptkashi. The view of Guptkashi is incredible and you will enjoy the ride. Take a hotel in Guptkashi and rest at night because the next day will be a long trek to Kedarnath Dham.

Day 7: Guptkashi – Gaurikund – Kedarnath(Rambara)


On day 7 the destination will be Kedarnath via Gaurikund. Gaurikund is a Hindu Pilgrimage site and base camp for trek to Kedarnath Temple. By with your vehicle you can only travel to 30 km after which the trek of 16 km to Kedarnath Temple will start. It will take the whole day to trek and reach a nearby place to Kedarnath which is Rambara. At night you have to stay, the next morning you will get a view of Kedarnath temple.

Day 8: View of Kedarnath and back to Guptkashi

At next day when the door of Kedarnath Temple opens, take the view of God and the nature of Kedarnath. Trek back to the Guptkashi, it also takes a whole day and at night you will reach back to Guptkashi. This process will take the whole day of yours and you have to do this all in the early morning. As soon as you take the view of Kedarnath Mandir, you will get early to return to Guptkashi.

Kedarnath – Badrinath

Day 9: Guptkashi – Joshimath

The journey of day 9 will begin from Guptkashi to Joshimath which is 145 km. On day 9 you will stay in Joshimath, take a hotel and stay there. You can also visit Joshimath Temple and can explore the Joshimath at evening and night. This is a beautiful city with beautiful people. The day will not be too hectic for you guys. Take the hotel for 2 days as the next day after returning from Badrinath you will stay here.

Day 10: Joshimath – Badrinath – Joshimath


The day which is the last day for your visit to the fourth Dham which is Badrinath Dham. In the early morning, the drive to Badrinath Dham will take 46 km and you will reach within 2 hrs. And the time is come to view the Badrinath Dham and enjoy the moment as you completed all four Dham. At the moment you will realize that your journey for the beautiful Char Dham is complete. After taking the view of Badrinath to get back to your hotel at Joshimath. This will take the whole day and your day is complete on day 10.

Day 11: Joshimath – Rishikesh

The journey of the next day will start from Joshimath and end in Rishikesh. The distance covered by these two places is 255 km which will take about 9 hrs to reach in the mountains. The journey is now to get back to where you have started. It is better to stay at Rishikesh because you will reach in the evening. You can also explore Rishikesh at night like Triveni Ghat, Laxman and Ram Jhula. If you travel for those long days so better to explore Rishikesh also.

Day 12: Rishikesh – Delhi

The final day is the day from Rishikesh to Delhi. The distance covered on the last day is 230 km. This day is simple as you are traveling to home back.

Many precautions that all should know before going to the Trip of Char Dham.

Medical Clearance

Before going on any trip all should you know that you are medically fit or not. In the mountains, this factor is most important and a person should be medically fit. In mountains the problem of breathing in high altitude and during trekking is common, so one should take medicine before them. Medicine for vomiting and cold etc. should carry.

Avoid Solo traveling

If you are traveling to Char Dham or any other place for a long time especially in the Mountains region then it’s better to travel alone. In some cases, it happens to take help from your partner. If you are traveling with any partner then your journey will not be boring and in case if want any help then both of you can help each other. It is better to have a partner with you, and if you are traveling in a group then definitely the trip will be more fun and adventures.

Can we complete the trip within 10 days?

Definitely you can complete within 10 days if you are traveling with your own vehicle and with groups. If you are traveling with your group then you all can drive time by time and can skip places where you have not to want to spend more time.

In this blog, we only discuss the average days that will be enough for Char Dham. You can take more days or even fewer days to complete.
